A Stone Polishing Service in Nashville Restored This Customer's Black Granite Countertop
August 01, 2018
Some people love to entertain. Most would love it if it didn't take so much effort and time to prepare, clean, shop, cook, and then get dressed to impress. A customer from downtown Nashville seemed to have everything figured out. However, an unfortunate mishap tarnished their granite kitchen island countertop and put their regular gatherings on hold. Thankfully, our Nashville Stone Polishing service was enough to save the day. This incident took place about two weeks prior. He prepared a small dinner party among friends. Nothing fancy, just dinner, a chilled bottle of wine, and a cheese platter. Due to the nice weather on this particular day, he decided to leave the windows open on his high-rise condo to enjoy the summer breeze. He never imagined this simple decision would have such a huge impact.
Soon after the condo's windows were open, the warm summer breeze flowing throughout the condo covered the bottle of wine and everyone's glasses in condensation. Unaware of the damage the granite countertop would receive, his friends left the bottle and cups unattended and the condensation soon turned into small puddles of water beneath each glass. This produced rings and water marks on the black granite countertop's surface.
When the customer became aware of the stains, he knew something had to be done before he could consider hosting another gathering in the condo. He was known among the acquaintances for his impeccable home and didn't want to ruin that reputation. He decided to search online for professional help and found Sir Grout Nashville. After browsing our site and seeing images of how we had successfully dealt with similar cases in the past, he decided to give us a call and book a free in-home evaluation.
The In-home Evaluation
On the evaluation day, our expert arrived on time to assess the problem. Indeed, the condensation that formed on the outside of the cold drinks had caused rings and water stains on the countertop's surface. That same condensation had provoked another condensation layer to develop under the sealant, and due to the granite's coating or sealant being weak or damaged, it left the rings and water stains.
In order to restore the black granite kitchen countertop, he proposed cleaning and polishing the surface to give it its sheen back. Finally, he would finish by applying Sir Grout's Enhance & Seal. This oil and water resistant solvent based penetrating sealer and enhancer is ideal for badly stained stones where stains cannot be removed and would help darken the stone to mask the stains.

The day of the restoration finally arrived, and our technician quickly moved all nearby objects and protected all neighboring surfaces, so he could get to work on the kitchen island countertop without damaging anything. He began the multistage process by applying a pH neutral, stone-safe cleaner on the stone's surface. Sir Grout cleaning products stand out from the rest as they have been enhanced with ingredients that can prevent bacteria growth for an extended period of time after application. He let it sit for a couple of minutes to loosen up the dirt before using a high-speed yet gentle scrubber to scrub out the grime. Finally, he used a steam cleaner to clean those troublesome and hard to reach places because it is crucial the countertop be completely clean before polishing.
Only after our technician was completely sure the island countertop was entirely clean and dried properly, did he begin with the polishing process. Using a low-speed buffer, he polished the stone with special polishing powders until a beautiful sheen was obtained. He later finished the job by applying multiple light coats of enhancing sealant until the granite darkened and the rings and water were no longer visible.
The Outcome
Once the multistage process was finished, the black granite countertop looked as good as ever. When the owner saw the results, he said it looked like it did when he first moved into the condo. He was very happy with the outcome and he was glad to get back to the routine of having company over in his high-rise condo.
Before leaving, our expert sat down with the owner and gave him a handful of tips to properly maintain and care for his restored granite kitchen island countertop, as well as their other stone surfaces:
- Regularly dust your stone surfaces to avoid scratches.
- Immediately wash and dry any food or liquids spilled on your granite countertop, as any acidic substance might compromise and damage the stone.
- Try using stone-safe, pH-neutral solutions only.
- Don't use the same rag for all surfaces when cleaning. Try having a different colored rag for each cleaner and surface to avoid contaminating the stone with an unsafe chemical.
- Check the stone's sealant every three months by making sure it doesn't absorb liquids.
